Obituary for Franklin Sylvester

Franklin August Sylvester 86, of Lake Forest, IL passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 21st. Frank was born on April 15, 1930 in Rochester, New York, son of Theresa (Barberio) and August Sylvester. Frank is survived by the love of his life, his wife Nancy of 61 years - and his six children: Kathleen of Fort Collins, CO: Linda of Evanston, IL; Mark (Beth) of Libertyville, IL: Sharon (Tim) Notaro of Libertyville, IL; Alessandra of Lake Forest, IL; and Beth (Graham) Cook of Lake Forest, IL. He was predeceased by his brother Robert (Linda) Sylvester of Rochester, NY. Frank was also the proud grandfather of nine: Shauna Sylvester; Jacquel ine, Angela & Gina Sylvester; Nicole (Paul Callero), Carissa & John Notaro; Grace & Anne Cook who all appreciated his strong love of family and his many travels with them. Frank's love extended to his relatives and friends from coast to coast. While attending high school he distinguished himself in sports and academics. As valedictorian of his class, he was also recognized as having the largest paper route in Rochester, NY. After working for 1 year at Eastman Kodak he set off for Hobart College from where he graduated with a degree in Political Science & History. At Hobart he was President of his Fraternity, Phi Phi Delta, and was an avid lacrosse player. In 1951 he enlisted in the Navy and graduated 1st in his Officers Training Class in Newport, RI. As Lt. J.G., he served as an intelligence officer during the Korean Conflict. He later taught at the Naval War College in Rhode Island. In 1958 he joined IBM, again finishing 1st in his sales class. He was then recruited by IBM to work in their newly formed information Marketing Division in Minneapolis, MN with their subsidiary the Service Bureau Corporation (SBC).In 1963, IBM called Frank to Dayton, OH to be manager in charge of an interdisciplinary team of Communications and Information Theorists working with NASA engineers at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. While in Minneapolis, MN with IBM he was awarded a United Fund award as Campaign Director. In 1967 he came to Chicago, IL as Sales Manager. After leaving IBM he started his own company and was then recruited by Comdisco, Inc. from where he retired in 1993. Frank loved golf and tennis almost as much as his family. He was a charter member of Conway Farms Golf Club and loved to play Deerpath Golf Club. A devout Catholic, he attended both St. Mary's Church and St. Patrick's Church in Lake Forest. Faithful, loyal, intelligent and honest, a man of high integrity, he was often called Sir Lancelot. He will be deeply missed. A memorial mass of thanksgiving will be held 12:00 noon at St. Patrick's Church, 950 W. Everett Rd, Lake Forest, IL May 13, 2017 with a greeting at 10:30. Interment will be private.
