Obituary for Charles Ellsworth Kolb II

Charles Ellsworth Kolb II of Lake Forest, passed away on October 27, 2016 at age 87. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Jane Burt Kolb, of 55 years, 5 devoted children: Norman Clark Kolb II “Nick”, Catharine Kolb Christopher “Kitty” (William), Kenneth W. Oakley, James B. Oakley (Nancy), Peter W. Oakley, 4 grandchildren: Matthew Christopher (Jessica), Andrew Christopher, Patrick Christopher, Martha Christopher and his great grandson Carson Quinn Christopher. Charles was predeceased by his parents Norman and Margaret Kolb and his sister Jane Kolb McCune. Charles was born in Ann Arbor and grew up in Battle Creek, MI. He attended Williams College and earned a BS in Engineering from the University of Michigan and a BA in Physics from Western Michigan University. He was a loyal brother of the CHI PSI Fraternity. Charles served in Germany during the Korean War as part of the Army Security Agency under the Department of the Army. In addition to the Good Conduct Medal, Charles earned the Army of Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Charles had an illustrious career in manufacturing operations and engineering which included employment with Bendix Missile Systems Division, Cook Electric Co, Litton Medical Systems, and EMI Medical. His accomplishments included part in the design and manufacturing of the Talos long range missile systems for use by the United States Military’s Bureau of Naval Weapons, the early home microwaves and the first mobile CT Scan machines. He was a former member of the AMA and multiple engineering societies. Charles was an avid diver and boater and had a keen interest in Astronomy. During his retirement, he taught Celestial Navigation and various levels of Boating Safety courses for the United States Power Squadrons. Charles was also a life-long golfer. One of the highlights of his life were rounds at the prestigious St. Andrews and Turnberry courses in Scotland with his son Nick. Charles became a devoted Episcopalian which gave him great joy and comfort. He was a loving parishioner of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, IL and a proud member of the parish literary group The Brotherhood of St. Bernard “The Old Dogs”. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, November 3, at The Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest, IL. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Charles E.
